A Haunting on State Street: St. Joseph, Michigan
Haunted house in St. Joseph...and it's not a Halloween attraction – it's for real. At least, it's real according to witnesses who claim they've experienced paranormal activity.
The house sits unassumingly on a neighborhood block, in an area that looks like a typical small town neighborhood, with other houses closeby and maybe an occasional kid roller skating down the sidewalk. But nestled between two other typical houses is one where some strange non-human activity has been going on.
According to the Southwest Michigan site, the house was built in 1860 and was once the home of Frank Herring, St. Joseph's first mayor. The current owner of the house was in a crawl space late one night, working on his renovation. Thinking he was alone, he heard someone call his name. He went downstairs and asked other crew members if they called him. No one had.

After a short bit, one of the crew mentioned he saw a girl in a white dress standing at the top of the stairs...just for a second before she disappeared.
After renovations were completed, the man and his family moved their belongings into the house. Then the fun began. Their 4-year-old son started hearing footsteps during the night, but his parents told him 'it's just an old house making noises' – but for the following year, the boy kept complaining about the footsteps. Then he stopped complaining. When asked why, he told them he wasn't scared anymore, because a girl in a white dress sat in his bedroom rocking chair, looked at him, and smiled. Right then he knew there was nothing to be frightened of.
A downtown employee told the family he lived in that house when he was a child and saw the girl in the white dress numerous times, standing at the top of the stairs.
The current family has weighed all the evidence as relayed to them by others and haven't really concluded whether their house is truly haunted or not.
But we know, don't we?
