Timing matters, and when it comes to gas prices, the early bird gets the savings—or not. Gas station owners and operators usually wait until late morning or early afternoon to change prices. Why? They want to know what the rest of the stations in the area are charging before setting their price.

So if you see a low price in the morning and you have a feeling the price might go up, fill up. Of course, it's a gamble because the price could drop after you top off.

According to Gas Buddy, Tuesday is the best day to fill up in Michigan, unlike in 30 other states (like Illinois and Indiana), where Monday has the lowest prices. As for the worst day, try to avoid Thursday. This is the day of the week that gas stations begin the weekend surge, when more people hit the road for leisure, making for longer trips and higher demand.
