The Girl Scouts Have Been Slinging Cookies for Over 100 Years
The history of the Girl Scouts' annual fundraiser dates back over 100 years, according to Wonderopilis.org:
In July 1922, Girl Scout national headquarters published an edition of The American Girl magazine for all Girl Scouts. The issue contained a recipe for a sugar cookie that could be baked and sold to raise funds for local councils. Thus, the simple sugar cookie was arguably the first true Girl Scout Cookie.
The Girl Scout Council of Philidelphia would be the first troop to take it a step further and sell commercially produced cookies, instead of baking them themselves, in 1933.
Just one year after Philly went commercial, the Greater New York Girl Scout Council would also sell 'store-bought-cookies', but this time they emblazoned the box with the phrase "Girl Scout Cookies", and thus a legend, a tradition, and a habit (for those of us addicted to Thin Mints) was born.
