A Massive Mayfly Storm Is Headed Towards Michigan
People have many different phobias, but I think everyone can agree that one of the nastiest and most skin-crawling thoughts is being surrounded by millions and millions of mayflies.
I can’t think of a worse hell than being surrounded by creepy flying insects that are flying around in biblical fashion. That’s my personal fear: flying insects, but it’s also a massive annoyance. It has me feeling a little bit appreciative that I live on the west side of the state because southeast Michigan is on the verge of a massive mayfly storm that’s headed their way, and my thoughts are truly with them.

Meteorologist Ross Ellet recently posted a graphic showing a massive mayfly storm that’s just about as big as Kalamazoo and Calhoun County combined, headed into Southeast Michigan through Monroe and Berlin Township in a Facebook post yesterday.
If you are new to Point Place, Luna Pier, up to Stony Point, just know the mayflies will get worse in the days ahead. The image below shows what it looks like on radar during the peak. The Mayfly swarm is so dense it looks like a massive storm!
As he continued, such a small thing hangs in the balance between this storm staying over water or hitting land:
I went back and looked at nightly archived radar images in June since 2020. The Mayfly peak week in the last several years is June 15th to June 22nd. A strong south or southwest wind will keep the massive bug swarm over the water. An east or northeast wind will bring the mayfly storm to the lakeshore.
So basically, when it comes down to is which way the wind will be blowing. I know Southeast Michigan right now. Has to be praying for calm weather because a slight wind will bring these nasty creatures to the shore. Not the time to be going to the beach, that’s for sure.
