Haunted Michigan: A Look Into The Traverse City State Hospital
The Traverse City State Hospital, also known as the Northern Michigan Asylum, was a significant mental health facility in Michigan, operating from 1885 until its closure in 1989.

Established to alleviate overcrowding in existing asylums, it became a model for psychiatric care during its time.

The hospital was founded in 1881 by lumber baron Perry Hannah and opened its doors in November 1885.
It was designed by architect Gordon W. Lloyd according to the Kirkbride Plan, which emphasized natural light and spacious environments to promote healing.
Initially, it housed 43 patients but grew to accommodate nearly 3,000 individuals by the late 1950s, serving a wide geographic area across northern Michigan.
Dr. James Decker Munson, the hospital's first superintendent, championed the moral treatment movement.
His philosophy, encapsulated in the idea that "beauty is therapy," guided the hospital's design and operations.
This approach focused on kindness and engagement, with patients participating in activities like farming and art.
The hospital began to decline in the mid-20th century due to changes in mental health care philosophies and legislation favoring deinstitutionalization.
The farm operations ceased in the 1950s, and many buildings were demolished or repurposed.
By 1989, the institution closed its doors, resulting in over 200 job losses and leaving many former patients without aftercare.
