
This U.P. Town Has Already Seen More than 13 Feet of Snow This Season
Winter in Michigan is a crazy thing.
While some areas of the state have had relatively mild winters in recent years, one town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has already far surpassed its yearly average for snowfall and winter is nowhere close to being over.

Frankly, I shouldn't be shocked, since this is what it looked like in Sault Ste. Marie when I went home to visit my family for Thanksgiving.
That Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm dropped over two feet of snow in the immediate area of Sault Ste. Marie. Surprisingly, if you got a few miles out of the city, roads were clear and there was little snow to be found.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Has Seen Double Its Normal Amount of Snow So Far This Season
I knew that the snow had continued to fall between Thanksgiving and now, but I didn't realize just how snowy it had been until I received a text and some photos from my brother last week.
At this point in the season, my parents' mailbox has nearly been swallowed by the snowbanks that line their road. As of February 18, Sault Ste. Marie had received 167.3 inches of snow so far for the season which was double the normal snowfall for this time of year.
That's right! In total, according to weather.gov, The Sault has received almost 14 FEET of snow so far this season! The average snowfall for Sault Ste. Marie during the winter is 120.1 inches.

We'll see how the rest of this winter shakes out for the hardy Yoopers who call Sault Ste. Marie home. While this year's snowfall isn't a record (yet), it's creeping up on it.
What is the Most Snow Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Has Ever Received in a Season?
The most snow ever recorded in a season in Sault Ste. Marie was back in the winter of 1995-96 when the town received a whopping 222 inches of snow. (This included a 24-hour period in which 24 inches of snow fell.)

How much more snow will Sault Ste. Marie see this season? It's hard to tell. But, they're currently under a winter weather advisory and there's plenty of snow shown in the extended forecast.
