Michigan Police Suffer Minor Injuries After M-80 Thrown At Cruiser
On July 4th, 2024 Dearborn police officers faced a dangerous situation when fireworks were deliberately thrown at them.
The incident, captured on dashcam footage, shows a firework being thrown at a marked police car near Fordson High School.
Witnesses described the firework as an M-80, a powerful type of explosive.
M-80s are powerful firecrackers that were originally designed as military training devices to simulate explosives and artillery fire.
The dashcam video shows that the suspects intentionally targeted the police vehicle.
Corporal Dan Bartok of the Dearborn Police Department said had this to say about the dangerous situation;
"Thankfully, the officers were able to take cover and get inside their patrol vehicle very quickly. And again as you saw on the video, that firework was a very large firework. It jarred the patrol car, causing damage to the patrol car, and our officers sustained some minor injuries as well,"
This close call wasn't an isolated event.
Dearborn police responded to over 200 calls related to fireworks violations on July 4th alone.
A similar incident occurred in the same area last year, where a mortar-style firework was fired at a squad car with two officers inside.
Dearborn police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Dearborn police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help their investigation.
They are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at (313) 943-2240.
