Michigan Sherriff Doesn’t Want Marijuana Dispensaries In His City
Regardless of whether you call it Mary Jane, jazz cabbage, the devil's lettuce, wacky tobaccy, sticky icky, giggle bush, silly cilantro, reefer, ganja, pot, weed, or by its government name, cannabis, it has been legal in Michigan for recreational use since 2018.
While it's legal in the state of Michigan, one sheriff is asking his residents to vote against allowing marijuana dispensaries in a city because he worries they will do more harm than good.
Michigan Sheriff Doesn't Want Marijuana Dispensaries in His City
Livingston County Sheriff Michael J. Murphy took to Facebook to voice his concern to residents of Howell about a proposal regarding the establishment of two adult-use retail cannabis establishments in the city of Howell.
Howell is not the only city where Sheriff Murphy opposes dispensaries.
He has also urged residents of Fowlerville to reach out to local leaders and express their concerns about the possibility of marijuana grow facilities in the city.
Where Can Residents of Howell Get Weed?
The closest dispensary to Livingston County is in Webberville, about three miles from the border of Livingston and Ingham counties and around 16 miles from Howell.
Sheriff Murphy stated that when Michigan voted to legalize recreational marijuana in 2018, no municipalities in the county opted to have dispensaries.
"I just don't want to see the city of Howell turn into some of these cities where we've seen in other states, where you have a pot shop, a check-cashing shop, and a tattoo parlor; that's not our community," said Sheriff Michael J. Murphy.
I hope that if my hometown of Howell allows marijuana dispensaries, the residents don't descend into "Reefer Madness."
These dispensaries may not be near Howell, but they do have some funny names.
