A new study set out to find the states with the strongest family connections.

Mixbook surveyed Americans in every state to learn about their family dynamics. They asked about how often they are in touch, the activities they do together, the characteristics of their family, and more.

To build a happiness scale, they awarded points to respondents who are in contact with family members more often, as well as those who enjoy time with their family and more.

Michigan did NOT do well. In fact, Mixbook found that the Michigan ranks as the No. 2 state with the least happy families.

According to Mixbook,

Residents of Michigan are the most likely to say they are not on good terms with all of their family members.

In terms of specific cities, Detroit ranks as the No. 5 city with the least happy families.

The only state with sadder families? Oregon.

On the flip side, the states with the happiest families are:

  1. Tennessee
  2. Maryland
  3. Idaho

Other key findings:

  • 1 in 4 Americans are in touch daily with family members outside of their home.

  • 35% of Americans say they never get into a serious argument with family members.

  • 1 in 3 Americans say their family only gets together when they absolutely have to.

  • Dining at home, watching TV, and shopping are the most common activities families do together.

  • The average American ranks their family's happiness as 7.3 out of 10.

  • 74% of Americans would describe their family as happier than most.
