Harbor Springs Annual Christmas Celebration
Harbor Springs has been celebrating Christmas in a big way for more than a century! According to the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce, in the early 1900s a young contractor named George B. Hartung decided to "enhance Harbor Springs’ Christmas spirit by placing a freshly cut tree in the middle of town".
The town embraced the tree, and the first official lighting of the Harbor Springs Christmas Tree took place Dec. 24, 1915, "on a chilly Christmas Eve in Zorn Park, with 2,000 people in attendance."
In 2023, Harbor Springs is celebrating the 108th anniversary of their community Christmas tree. The annual tree lighting will take place Saturday, Nov. 25th.
Tree lighting festivities will start at 6p.m. The public is invited to sing carols, enjoy the lighting of the tree on Main Street, and celebrate the winners of the annual window decorating contest.
Also available again this year is the mailbox to Santa that will be located at the Lyric Threatre.
Everyone is then invited to attend an ecumenical chili dinner in the Holy Childhood Parish Hall at 150 W. Main Street, just adjacent to the tree, where you can also enjoy homemade cookies and hot cocoa!
Want to watch from home? The Christmas tree lighting will be streamed live on the Harbor Spring's Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.
