Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Thursday that high school contact sports can start in Michigan next Monday (February 8).

This covers boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, and competitive cheer.  Those sports had been on pause since November.  Other winter sports like skiing and bowling had already begun this season.

The contact sports will have restrictions on them, with masks being worn during practice and games.  As well as attendance restrictions in the facilities.

You can see the list of restrictions in each sport here:

Last year's boys and girls basketball tournaments went unfinished as the coronavirus pandemic hit the state of Michigan in March.  The boys tournament were in the district phase, while the girls tournament was in the regional phase when it was stopped.

This year's tournaments have been pushed back into late March so that teams can get as many regular season games in as possible.
