The Lansing City Council announced on Monday night that they have approved a measure that would bring professional soccer to downtown Lansing in the spring of 2019.

The Lansing Ignite, as they will be called, will play their games next spring at Cooley Law School Stadium, which is the home of the Lansing Lugnuts, the Class A minor league baseball affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Ignite will play in the United Soccer League's League One, which is affiliated with Major League Soccer.  They will begin play next March with the season running through September.

This move means the end of the five-year run of Lansing United's men's soccer team, team founder and owner Jeremy Sampson will join the front office of the Ignite.  The Lansing United women's team will play next spring in their second season of existence.
