Fowler Stays Atop CMAC With Big Road Win At Dansville
With first place in the CMAC on the line Wednesday night Fowler and Dansville both gave gutty efforts, and it was the Eagles who came out on top of the Aggies 66-61.
Dansville started the game with great interior defense, forcing Fowler to only one field goal (a Mason Pline fastbreak dunk) and the Aggies had a 12-4 lead through eight minutes of play.
Fowler then turned on the jets and adjustments made by head coach Jason George got the Eagles rolling. Fowler was able to cut the Dansville lead to eight by half and four points by the end of the third quarter. Mason Pline paced the Eagles with 22 points throughout the ball game and Fowler got a surprise spark off their bench with sophomore Lewis Miller (who was making his varsity debut in this game) putting in four triples and scoring 14 points.
Dansville adjusted to Fowler's increased pace with some long full court passes that connected more often than not for easy layups. Devin Patrick (six assists) and Caleb Hodgson (five assists) were able to hit guys like Nathan Soule and Nathan Mack in stride more than 50 feet away for fast transition buckets to keep up with Fowler past the first quarter.
In the second half the game was much more back and forth with the lead changes coming multiple times a quarter. Despite being down six with under a minute to go, a couple of missed free throws from Fowler and a Devin Patrick three got Dansville back to within one possession and possession of the ball with seven seconds to go.
On the inbound play, Caleb Hodgson went for a quick long ball and his shot came up about four feet short due to heavy contact that went uncalled. Dansville coach Cole Feldpausch was livid roaming out of his coaching box to complain on the no-call. Fowler picked up the short shot and after a Dansville foul, Owen Simon hit his two free throws to give the game its final score.
Fowler is now 10-1 (8-1 CMAC) and leads the conference standings by a half game over Laingsburg. Dansville drops to 9-3 on the season (6-2 CMAC).
