Former OSU, Lions Great “Hopalong” Cassidy Passes Away
1955 Heisman Trophy winner and key member of the 1957 NFL championship squad with the Detroit Lions, Howard "Hopalong" Cassidy has passed away on Friday morning.
Cassidy was one of the all-time greats ever at Ohio State University, winning the Heisman (pictured above) as a senior under head coach Woody Hayes in 1955. He then was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round in 1956.
Cassidy played eight seasons in the NFL, seven of them with the Lions. He was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
Cassidy was 85 years old.
