Former Michigan Mr. Basketball and former MSU basketball star Keith Appling (pictured while at MSU) was denied bail in a Detroit court on Thursday.

Appling is accused and charged with first-degree murder dating back to a May 22nd incident that led to the death of 66-year old Clyde Edmonds.

Appling was arrested on May 24th in Chelsea, Michigan and has been incarcerated ever since.  He has had several legal issues since leaving MSU in 2014.  He served time in prison for various gun charges several years ago.  And he served probation for a drug charge last year.

His former MSU head coach Tom Izzo told MLive on Wednesday:  “I’m thinking about him, I feel bad about him, It’s a shame what’s happened.  ” I hope and pray to God that it’s not true, but I have no knowledge of anything except that I was trying to help him get back on track, as were more than a few people.”

Keith was Michigan's Mr. Basketball in 2010.  He holds the MHSAA state finals scoring record with 49 points for Detroit Pershing in the Class A championship game against Kalamazoo Central.  After his college career, he had two short stints in the NBA before playing in Europe.
