First Day of Summer in Mid Michigan Sees Strong Thunderstorms March through and Even A Tornado
Sunday was Fathers Day, and it was also the first day of summer. Figures that we would have cooler temperatures and crazy weather, we do live in Michigan and Mother Nature always likes to keep us on our toes.
Early Sunday the National Weather Service and local stations began seriously looking at our weather and the storms that were headed our way. These storms packed a serious punch as they moved across Lake Michigan heading our way.
My daughter Payton lives in Kalamazoo and Sunday she was visiting us in Holt, after looking at the radar we decided that she should head back home. It was a good thing she left when she did, the skies opened up and dumped rain on that area and strong winds with it.
As the first line of evening storms got closer to Mid Michigan, our thunderstorm watch turned into a warning and our skies turned angry and dark. Strong winds caused tree damage and power outages in West Michigan, some areas even reporting hail, luckily our area just saw heavy rain with little damage.
The National Weather Service reported a tornado touch down in Branch Counties Coldwater area. Fortunately, that area did not see any major damage, and no one was injured.
Yesterday's storms did bring some much-needed rain to Mid Michigan, so I guess the thunder and lightning show was just a bonus. (yippee)
The Lansing area saw temps in the 80's last week, so we should start off our first full day of summer with temperatures in the 60's. How does the old saying go? If you don't like the weather in Michigan just wait a minute and it will change.
