Eight Area High School Football Teams Make AP Polls
Eight Mid-Michigan high school football teams are in this week's Associated Press statewide poll.
In addition to that, a total of 17 area teams would qualify for the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) playoffs if the season ended today.
4-1 DeWitt is rated #2 in the Division 3 poll this week. They almost certainly would be rated number 1 had they not lost to Portland in Week 2.
Speaking of Portland, they are ranked #3 in the Division 5 poll ahead of their Week 6 matchup with Lansing Catholic (which you can hear on The Game 730 AM WVFN this Friday night, starting at 6pm). The 4-1 Olivet Eagles are in the Receiving Votes category in Division 5.
As for the 5-0 Lansing Catholic Cougars, they are ranked number 1 in Division 6. And the surprising 4-1 Ovid-Elsie Marauders (only loss was to Portland in Week 1) are rated #9 in Division 6.
In Division 7, unbeaten Pewamo-Westphalia is ranked 2nd behind Jackson Lumen Christi.
And in 8-Player Football, unbeaten Portland St. Patrick and Morrice are ranked 3rd and 4th, respectively.
Teams that are unranked but would qualify for the playoffs at this point are: 4-1 Grand Ledge (Division 1), 3-2 East Lansing (Division 2), 4-1 Haslett (Division 3), 3-2 Williamston (Division 5), 3-2 Mason (Division 3), 3-2 Charlotte (Division 4), 3-2 Ithaca (Division 7), 4-1 Laingsburg (Division 7), and 3-2 Fowler (Division 8).
In 8-Player football, Morrice (Division 1) and Portland St. Patrick (Division 2) would easily make the playoffs. And both teams are threats to state titles this year (Morrice won the state title in Division 1 in 2018, while Portland St. Patrick has been Division 2 runners-up in three of the last four seasons.
We will have the Portland at Lansing Catholic game right here on The Game 730 AM WVFN starting with the pregame at 6:00. Eric "Doc" Love and Brock Palmbos will have the call from Cougar Stadium just before 7:00. And it's brought to you by Cherry Creek Mortgage Company and Lansing Surgical Associates.
