A Wintertime Cruise Thru Mostly-Abandoned Detroit Neighborhoods
There are numerous photos, videos, and films depicting some of Detroit's old and deserted neighborhoods. It's sad, frustrating, and fascinating all at the same time.
These are not neighborhoods you would want to drive down at night, or even in the daytime for that matter. Good luck if you ever do drive in these areas and your vehicle breaks down. What would you do if you were in an area where you weren't getting any cell phone service? Would you attempt to knock on one of these doors and ask to use a phone? Would you start walking until you reached some type of store or business? It's easy to answer, but you never really know what you would do unless you are put in that position.
The scenes below were captured during winter 2022. The images contain the bleak darkness of the neighborhoods and rotting homes, all against a snowy background. Without the greenness of summer, these places look all the more dreary thanks to lack of color.
Many (but not all) of these neighborhoods fell into disrepair thanks to factories closing and employees moving away, deserting their homes as they looked for work and a life elsewhere. There are a smattering of neighborhoods that have been renovated but there are still more to go. If funds aren't accessible, then demolition begins.
People always have their own theories and solutions...and residents of these neighborhoods are waiting for the right one.
