Brent Darnell scored the only goal by either team in a shootout as Michigan State clained a shootout win over the Penn State Nittany Lions Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena in State College. Michigan State (7-10-2, 1-2-2 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the first period as Ryan Keller put the puck past Penn State goalie Eamon McAdam for a 1-0 lead. Penn State (10-7-3, 4-2-1) tied the game with 56 seconds left in the period on an Eric Schied goal but the tie only lasted 24 second as Villiam Haag fired a wrist shot past McAdam for a 2-1 lead. After a scoreless second period, David Goodwin found the back of the net with 7:18 left in regulation to force overtime. After both teams failed to score in the extra session, the stage was set for Darnell's heroics. McAdam made 33 saves for Penn State while Jake Hildebrand stopped 46 of 48 shots for Michigan State. The Spartans and Nittany Lions face off again Saturday afternoon in Happy Valley. Pregame coverage begins at 4:30 pm on Lansing's Sports Station The Game 730.
