If you're planning to head to the west side of the state to visit one of the many great beaches along Lake Michigan, be prepared for some less than ideal swimming conditions today and tonight. In fact, the National Weather Service says that DANGEROUS swimming conditions are expected to develop later this morning and will continue into Saturday morning. The NWS says that strong currents and large waves between 3 and 6 feet are expected. The area with the dangerous swimming conditions stretches from St. Joseph and goes all the way up to Manistee. The National Weather Services also says that many of the piers along Lake Michigan should be avoided today and tonight due to the potential for some really big waves.

Earlier this week, the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project released numbers from the 4th of July weekend that showed a spike in the number of drowning cases in the Great Lakes. You can read more about those numbers in a report by the Detroit Free Press by clicking here.
