For the 12th consecutive year, the Dallas Cowboys have been named Forbes' most valuable NFL franchise.  They were ranked higher than the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

Forbes has been ranking NFL team values for the past 21 years, and they released their 2018 version Thursday.

The Cowboys are worth $5 billion, according to the publication, which is $1.2 billion more than the Patriots, who are worth $3.8 billion.

Rounding out the top five are the Giants at $3.3 billion; the Los Angeles Rams at $3.2 billion; and the Washington Redskins, also at $3.2 billion.

If you were curious, there is no direct correlation between winning on the field and a franchise's value.  Seven of the top 10 teams did not make the playoffs in 2017 (Cowboys, Giants, Redskins, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, New York Jets and Houston Texans).

The average NFL franchise is valued at $2.57 billion.

This past season's Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles came in 10th with a franchise value of $2.75 billion.

The Detroit Lions were not on this list.
