Brock’s Random Thoughts: On Area H.S. Basketball
So we're about halfway through the shortened six-week high school basketball season in the state of Michigan.
In the Mid-Michigan area (as of this writing on March 2nd), we have four area teams who are undefeated. They are: East Lansing (5-0), Olivet (10-0), P-W (6-0), Dansville (7-0). And P-W faces Dansville on the road Wednesday night. You can hear that game on The Game 730 AM WVFN starting at 7:00.
East Lansing is unbeaten, but they are on COVID-19 pause for the time being. Who knows how well they'll play if/when they return. Olivet probably has the best win of the season, a double-overtime two-point win at Leslie last week. The biggest upset so far, IMO, has been Mason's victory over Williamston just last week. And Fowlerville's Brendan Young has been scoring buckets at will for the Gladiators this season.
As for the girls, East Lansing and Haslett are undefeated. Both have great wins this season with EL beating DeWitt and Haslett knocking off Williamston. Portland, Fowler, Laingsburg. Olivet, and Portland St. Patrick are all off to very good starts, too. P-W is off to a tough start at 2-3. But you can never count them out.
I just hope we can get through the state tournament with no COVID-19 problems. I know that's a tough ask, but one can hope. That is the most important thing to me. After everything we've been through this last year, let's hope we can get a resolution to the tournaments that we didn't get last year.
