MacSimBar Paper Company in Otsego began operations in 1905. They were much more than just paper, supplying roofing and carpet accessories among others.

According to Ruin Road, after a name change to the Rock-Tenn Paper Company, it shut down for good in 2004. Cogswell Property bought the building and took out all the copper they could find. However, taxes on the building were not being paid, and the building went into foreclosure. To add insult to injury, the person responsible went to jail for violating the Clean Air Act.

The Environmental Protection Agency went in and cleaned it all up, removing approximately twenty tons of waste and paint, asbestos insulation, and contaminated soil. Now it sits abandoned, deserted, deteriorating...waiting for demolition. Air monitoring has reportedly been implemented.

A meeting was held in August 2021 regarding demolition and possible re-development.

With all that waste - a lot of chemical, probably - it is another good reason not to explore here...along with the above warning that you risk prosecution without proper permission. "Proper" permission does not mean your mom telling you it's okay...you know exactly what I mean...try to locate proper authorities to get permission...it ain't that hard!

Where to start? How about with a nearby neighbor? They'll either yell at you or help you locate the right people or person.

Just be satisfied in the fact that there are others who do venture into these places -  legally permissable - so we don't have to. We can just sit back, relax, and take a look at the photo gallery...which you can do now...
