4th of July – Have You Tried Grilling Fruit?
So a couple of weeks back, there was a cookout with some friends.
There was the normal barbecue fare. I think on this occasion, wings were the featured main grill event.
But I have some pretty adventurous friends. We like to cook and experiment. One day I'll tell you about the deep friend everything party. Somebody got a new fryer and let's just say everything from fried pickles to deep fried oreos were on the menu. We like trying new stuff.
Back to the cookout.
It had been decided early on as we were putting the wings on the grill that there would be a foray into grilled fruits.
Our pieces to work with?
Watermelon and peaches.
Suffice it to say, we were not fans of the texture and taste of the watermelon.
However, if I may suggest, you should definitely try grilling peaches.
Here's what we did.
We halved the peaches and removed the pits.
Brushed a little olive oil on them.
Flesh side down first for about 3-4 minutes.
Flipped them.
And after another three minutes or so, took them off.
As we were grilling them, we were trying to decide how to proceed once we removed them.
Here is the secret that I suggest you take with you this 4th of July holiday weekend.
After removing the peaches from the grill, we drizzled them with salted caramel sauce. Mind you, not a lot. Drizzle. And salted caramel. Later we tried just plain caramel and it was meh.
So, drizzle grilled peaches with salted caramel sauce. Then, top with whipped cream. We used some from a can.
And let me tell you, it was amazing.
If you're looking for something different and you've never tried grilled fruit, I'd suggest you give it a try.
These are all just idea starters. Some folks brush the fruit with oil. Others sprinkle with fruit to start. And some even go further with a butter and brown sugar glaze. All up to you.
Here's some more suggestions.
- Grilled peaches with pork chops/chicken
- Grilled bananas with fresh ice cream for a new take on the banana split
- Watermelon salad with feta cheese and basil or mint
Here's a few extra videos to help you grill fruit correctly and surprise your guests or friends with a new grilled treat. Enjoy and have a happy and safe 4th of July.
You'll probably need some fresh peaches to grill for this weekend too. You're in luck with The Peach Truck.
The Peach Truck is a business where an actual giant truck comes to town and you can buy Georgia Peaches.
