Last weekend was rough for the Lansing-area with area teams going a combined 3-5 overall. Yes, it could have been worse considering there were no area team vs area team matchups but consider for a moment the Lansing-area lost just as many teams last weekend as they did the weekend before. It gives you an idea of the carnage.

Still there are three teams left from the Mid-Michigan area that are either vying for a berth in the championship game, or competing for their division's state title. Interestingly enough all three teams are travelling north for their games this weekend.

Ithaca plays Traverse City St. Francis at Mt. Pleasant High School in division 6 action. That St. Francis program produced all the Bullough brothers who went on to play at Michigan State, however there are no more Bullough brothers on the current edition of the team. The winner goes on to Ford Field to play the winner of Jackson Lumen Christi and Warren Michigan Collegiate.

Pewamo-Westphalia goes slightly more north than the Yellowjackets, meeting up with Lake City at Clare High School in a division 7 semifinal. P-W is looking to repeat as division 7 state champs and are trying to go to Ford Field for the third straight year. The winner of this game plays the winner of Saugatuck and Madison Heights Madison, who play at Lansing Catholic high school.

And in the 8-man ranks in division 2, Portland St. Patrick's is going for a state crown against Crystal Falls Forest Park. The Shamrocks travel the furthest north of our area teams going all they way to the Superior Dome in the upper peninsula. PSP hasn't been in a state final championship football game since 1997 when they lost the Class D title that year to Lake Linden-Hubbell.
