Your Five Things For October 2nd: Giants Win Wild Card Game

1. Giants Top Pirates Advance To Next Round

In Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Giants took on the Pittsburgh Pirates for the chance to play the Washington Nationals. The Giants used great pitching and some timely hits to win 8-0 to advance to the next round.  Madison Bumgarner took the mound for the Giants and was focused from the beginning.  He pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.  His counterpart, Edinson Volquez, had 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts.  The Giants were also able to overcome two errors throughout the game to preserve the shutout. The Giants will stay on the East Coast to play the Washington Nationals.

2. Red Wings Drop Preseason Game vs Penguins

Red Wings hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins last night at Joe Louis Arena.  This was also the first action that Sidney Crosby has seen all preseason long.  The Red Wings dropped the game 2-0 giving up goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods.  Jimmy Howard was in net for the Red Wings and made 31 saves on 33 shots.  The Red Wings fall to 3-2-1 and have two more preseason games before the season opener next week.

3. Cowboys Player Under Investigation

Cowboys player C.J. Spillman is under investigation in Grapevine, Texas.  He is under investigation for a possible sexual assault that was at a hotel on September 20th.  The team flew to St. Louis the next day which Spillman played.  Spillman was cut by the 49ers before the season and was signed by the Cowboys on September 1st.  Read more about the situation and investigation here.

4. Miguel Cabrera Declines Playoff Bonus

Miguel Cabrera declined his playoff ring citing that he just wants the ring.  In the story, Cabrera refused to sign the paperwork for the bonus which would make him eligible.  The story was first reported by USA Today.  Read the rest of the story here.

5. Tigers Get Set To Face Baltimore

Tonight, the Tigers and the Orioles will battle in game one of the ALDS.The Tigers will sendd Max Scherzer to the mound tonight and Baltimore will send Chris Tillman to the mound.  Lineups will be announced later this afternoon as it is unknown if Rajai Davis's injury will keep him out of the lineup or not.  First pitch tonight at 5:37 PM.
