The Chicago White Sox held off an ninth inning rally by the Detroit Tigers to take the opener of a four game series 6-5 at U.S. Cellular Field Monday night. Chicago (32-33) was led by Jose Abreu's 17th home run of the season, a two run shot that broke open a 3-2 ball game. The Sox also got two RBI from Conor Gillaspie and three hits from Gordon Beckham. Hector Noesi (2-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win and Ronald Belisario pitched the ninth for the save. Detroit (33-27) scored on solo home runs from Miguel Cabrera and Eugenio Suarez and a two shot from Victor Martinez. The Tigers got it within one with an Alex Avila RBI double. Rick Porcello (6-4) gave up nine hits over five innings for the loss. The two teams go back at it Tuesday night with Justin Verlander (6-5) taking the hill for Detroit and John Danks (4-5) starting for the White Sox.
