The Detroit Tigers said first piece of business in the offseason is re-signing Victor Martinez.

Well, that's just what the Tigers did yesterday. It looks like the 36 year old Martinez will sign a 4-year deal for around $68 million.

Now, don't get me wrong V-Mart is a great hitter but that's a lot of money for a designated hitter. Victor Martinez began his career with the Cleveland Indians, then had gone to the Boston Red Sox and has been with the Tigers for awhile. In that time in Motown he tore both his knees and was out an entire year. But, he has come back with a fury and hit great the last two years.

Victor Martinez is definitely in the right place at the right time. Now, he will be earning in the neighborhood of $17 million a year. This contract will end when he is 41 years old, the same as his number on his jersey. If any hitter in the game deserves it, it is V-Mart, but like I said he is a DH. But Martinez can spell people at first base and catcher once in awhile.

All I can say is the Tigers have other holes to fill to get back to the World Series. The American League Central will no longer be the worst division in MLB.
