The Detroit Tigers won the first game in the series against the Kansas City Royals, 9-5. The Tigers got on the board in the first during the 2nd inning. After Andrew Romine reached on a fielding error by Eric Hosmer, scoring 2 runs. The Royals tied in the 3rd with a 2 RBI double off the bat of Nori Aoki. The Tigers showed their fangs in the 3rd, starting with an RBI Victor Martinez single. They kept adding on runs starting wtih a Don Kelly RBI double. Nick Castelannos hit an RBI double, Alex Avila took the plate and hit an RBI double as well. Torii Hunter hit a line drive single to bring home Avila, and the Tigers had a 6 run lead. They Royals started something in the 7th after Billy Butler grounded out to bring in a run from Hosmer. Lorenzo Cain took the plate and hit a line drive to right field, where Torii Hunter and Don Kelly collided, leading to an inside-the-park home run. In the 8th, Miguel Cabrera hit a ground ball base hit for a run to add onto their lead.
