On Monday afternoon, Fox Sports Detroit Tigers broadcaster Kirk Gibson (pictured) was named as a special assistant to Tigers VP of Baseball Ops and General Manager Al Avila.

Gibson has a long history with the Tigers, he was drafted by the team out of Michigan State in 1979.  And he played for the club through the 1987 season, where he was a key member of the 1984 World Championship squad.

After tours of duty with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.  Gibson finished his career with the Tigers from 1993-95.  He has been a TV broadcaster for the team on two occasions, including his current stint (since 2015).

Gibson will continue his role as TV analyst alongside new play-by-play broadcaster Matt Shepard and fellow analyst and former teammate Jack Morris.
