The Detroit Tigers have announced via their official Twitter account that they have unconditionally released pitcher Mike Pelfrey on Thursday morning.

Pelfrey was signed to a 2-year contract worth $16 million before the 2016 season, but struggled as a starter last season (4-10, 5.07 ERA), and was demoted to the bullpen.

The struggles continued this spring (7.94 ERA), and with the team unable to work out a trade for him, the team has decided to let him go.  The club still owes Pelfrey $8 million for the 2017 season.
