The world's Number 1 golfer, Rory McIlroy announced via Instagram today that he will not defend his Open championship next week at St. Andrews in Scotland.

He tore a ligament in his left ankle while playing soccer with friends last weekend.  He is in a cast and on crutches at this time.

No timetable is set for a return to the game.  McIlroy is also the defending champion of golf's final major of the year, the PGA Championship, which is next month at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
