Michigan State University expelled former wide receiver Keith Mumphrey because of a sexual misconduct violation back in 2015, the Detroit Free Press is reporting.

The news surfaced through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by the Free Press into MSU Police documents.

Mumphrey was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her dorm room on March 17, 2015. The campus police report said the two had met through an online dating site a few months prior to the incident.

Mumphrey's MSU career was over at that time and he worked out as part of MSU's official pro day for NFL scouts on March 18, just one day after the incident in question. He was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft in 2015 by the Houston Texans.

Police requested third degree criminal sexual conduct charges against Mumphrey but in August of 2015 the Ingham County prosecutor's office, then led by Stuart Dunnings III, declined to press charges because the case couldn't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The accuser also did not return contact with the prosecutor's office.

Michigan State continued with a Title IX investigation into the matter.

On June 7, 2016 Mumphrey was given notice via email by the vice president of MSU's Student Affairs and Services that he violated the university’s policy on relationship violence and sexual misconduct and could not re-enroll "in any capacity" at MSU. He was also banned from the East Lansing campus until December 31, 2018. A violation of that order could lead to an arrest.

The police department's formal investigation was closed a few weeks later.

Mumphrey had planned to get his master's degree in communication after finishing a bachelor's degree in that same field in 2014. He has not received his master's degree according to the report.
