Red Wings in Russia: Medal Round Today

The 2016 Ice Hockey World Championships are in the medal round, the final four if you will, and the Red Wings are well represented, with Finland, Russia and the United States all in contention for a gold medal.

All three of those national teams contain Red Wings. Russia (Pavel Datsyuk and Alexey Marchenko) will take on Finalnd (Teemu Pulkkinen) in the first semifinal while the USA (Dylan Larkin) take on Canada in the second semifinal.

Gustav Nyquist and Sweden were knocked out by Canada in the quarterfinals. Nyquist has been arguably the most impressive Red Wing in the World championships, scoring seven goals in eight games for Sweden. He adds an assist as well to be a true point per game player this tournament. Nyquist is tied with Finnish sensation Patrik Laine (draft eligible this year) for the tournament lead in goals.

At the end of group play at the 2016 IIHF World Championships in Russia only one Red Wings did not qualify for the knockout stages, Tomas Jurco and team Slovakia.

Pavel Datsyuk (Russia) is also a point per game player to this stage. He has one goal and seven assists in eight games. Regardless of their semifinal outcome Russia will still have another game to play either for a gold or bronze medal.

Dylan Larkin (USA) is nearly a point per game player. He has two goals and five assists in eight games.
