Longtime NBC Sports personality Bob Costas (pictured) announced Thursday morning on the "Today" show that he will relinquish his role as main Olympics anchor/host starting with next year's Winter Olympics.

Mike Tirico, who joined NBC last summer after a 25+ year stint with ESPN, will take over the main anchor duties in Costas' place.

Costas has been with the network since 1980, the Syracuse University graduate got his professional start as the radio and TV play-by-play for the ABA's Spirits of St. Louis in the mid-1970's.
