The change of the season is upon us as fall colors have begun to appear in Michigan. Here's when to make your travel plans to expect fall colors at their peak.

From the Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau, they shared on Facebook a look at the fall color in Michigan's norther border city.

Peak color should hit the Soo and Chippewa County around mid-September, making it a perfect time for a fall drive across the Mackinac Bridge.

When to Expect Peak Color in Michigan During 2017

According to an interactive map produced by SmokeyMountains.com, here is when you can expect peak colors around the state.

Minimal changes are occurring in the western Upper Peninsula while patchy colors can been seen across the eastern UP and into the Keweenaw Peninsula. Minimal changes are also occurring in the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula.

The week following the Labor Day holiday, all of the Upper Peninsula, save for the counties bordering Wisconsin will be displaying partial color.

Minimal color can be seen state-wide.

For the middle of September, expect the Upper Peninsula to be at peak color with near-peak conditions in the Leelanau Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan.

By the week of September 24, most of the Upper Peninsula will be past peak with only the areas of Ironwood, Iron Mountain and Menominee still at peak.

The Northern Lower Peninsula will be at peak color making it the perfect time for a drive on M-22 or the Tunnel of Trees north of Harbor Springs.

The first of October brings a short season of peak color to all of the Lower Peninsula south of Traverse City. The UP and northern Lower Michigan are now past peak.

And one short week later, on October 8, all of Michigan is forecast to be past peak colors.
