Bay Area NBC Sports radio host Matt Maiocco reported earlier today that the San Francisco 49ers signed QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $27.5 million deal.

This effectively makes Jimmy G the highest annually paid quarterback in the NFL.

Last off season, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford made waves after announcing his $135 million five year extension which made him the highest paid NFL player ever.

Garoppolo's contract eclipses Stafford's annual salary by $0.5 million.

Reasonably, the news turned several heads given the San Francisco quarterback's limited experience in the league. Garoppolo is 7-0 in his only seven NFL starts.

Rumors suggested 49ers offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan wanted to draft Garoppolo in 2014 while with the Browns organization.
