The Detroit Free Press reports that he was in hospice care for the past six weeks and died of complications from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Carey worked on Detroit Tigers broadcasts from 1972 to 1991. He was alongside another Tigers broadcast legend in Ernie Harwell for the call of the 1984 World Series win.

Carey was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
