Michigan State University Athletic Director Bill Beekman announced on Thursday that the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will cease operations after the 2020-21 school year concludes.

Athletes who are currently on the rosters will have their scholarships honored for the remainder of their education at MSU.  Any athletes that want to transfer to another school will be allowed to do so, likely without sitting out a year.

MSU last won a Big Ten title in men's swimming in 1957 (their only conference title).  The women's swim team finished 4th in 1986 (their highest conference finish ever).

Beekman said in a letter on msuspartans.com that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the athletic department is facing unprecedented financial losses.  Over the years, the school has cut men's lacrosse, fencing, boxing, and men's gymnastics.

The Spartans will have 21 varsity sports next school year, which is five above the NCAA minimum to retain Division I status.
