USA Today's Dan Wolken tweeted out Wednesday that Michigan State associate head coach and defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett had been engaging in ongoing talks with Florida State.

FSU let former head coach Jimbo Fisher go after a 7-6 season including no wins against ranked opponents.

Incoming FSU head coach Willie Taggart chose not to retain Charles Kelly, who served as FSU defensive coordinator under Fisher, leaving the position vacant.

Fisher joined the Texas Tech coaching staff while Kelly will move on to a special teams role with Tennesee.

Barnett has spent 14 seasons coaching under Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio.

During that time, he's sent seven defensive backs to the NFL including Darqueze Dennard and Trae Waynes.

This past season, Barnett's defense was ranked No. 7 in total defense, only behind Wisconsin and Michigan in the Big Ten.

If Barnett joins the FSU staff, he could be in for a big pay day. Kelly reportedly made almost twice Barnett's salary this last season.
