If you're like 98% of us, you probably didn't expect the No. 1 seeded (and No. 1 ranked) University of Virginia to lose to No. 16 (and No. 64 ranked) University of Maryland Baltimore County Friday night.

UMBC didn't just beat UVA though, they thrashed Virgina 74-54*.

*(See "defense doesn't always win championships".)

Since the relatively unknown school decided to make history as the first No. 16 seed in the men's tournament to beat a No.1 seed, it's time to get acquainted with the new internet heroes.

UMBC's mascot is the "Retrievers"

Seriously, how can you root against a team called the Retrievers?

UMBC plays in the America East Conference

They finished second in the regular season with an in-conference record of 12-4.

You might recognize another America East member, Stony Brook, who lost 91-73 to Michigan State earlier this season.

UMBC Point Guard K.J. Maura is the smallest player in college basketball

Despite a program weight of 140 lbs, ESPN reported late in the season that Maura's weight was actually 132 lbs.

His weight clearly didn't affect his game as Maura became the America East Defensive Player of the Season.

This was UMBC's first tournament appearance since 2008

The 2008 loss to No. 2 Georgetown was the first time in school history the Retrievers headed to the big dance.

Head Coach Ryan Odom got paid $10,000 for beating UVA

According to USA Today's Steve Berkowitz, Odom could earn up to $90,000 if his team wins the tournament.
