After falling behind 3-1 after the morning fourball session, the European Ryder Cup team swept the afternoon foursomes, or alternate shot, matches, to take a 5-3 lead over the United States after the first day of the 42nd Ryder Cup Matches at Le Golf National near Paris, France.

None of the afternoon matches were close.  The closest match was  a 3&2 victory for Henrik Stenson & Justin Rose over the USA's Dustin Johnson & Rickie Fowler.

This is the first time since 1989 that either team has swept a session (winning all four points).

As far as the early morning matches, the Americans won two close matches.  Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka won 1up over Justin Rose and Jon Rahm while Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth won 1up over Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton.

Saturday morning will feature four more four-ball, or better ball, matches with the afternoon featuring four foursomes, or alternate shot, matches.  With the twelve individual singles matches set for Sunday.
