Detroit Lions' Trevor Bates was arrested in New York early Saturday and then allegedly punched a police officer in the face.

According to the New York Post, Bates, 25, was taken into custody around 3a.m. in front of the Hampton Inn Hotel in East Elmhurst for refusing to pay cab fare.

Once at a police precinct in Queens, Bates allegedly punched a police officer in the face. According to police, it then took multiple officers to subdue the football player and a taser was used.

Bates was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the team released a statement:

"We are aware of the arrest of Trevor Bates earlier today in New York. We have not spoken to Trevor as of yet and are still in the process of gathering more information. The Detroit Lions will have no further comment at this time."

He is facing charges including second-degree assault and resisting arrest.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker is in his first season with the Lions and has appeared in nine games.
