Alex Avila's walk off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park. Detroit (72-60) took the lead on Avila's sacrifice fly in the second, the first of his two RBI scoring Nick Castellanos. New York (69-63) tied the game in the third then took the lead in the fourth on Brian McCann's RBI ground out. Rajai Davis hit an RBI single to tie the game again in the fifth and the game remained tied until Avila's late game heroics. Phil Coke (2-2), in relief of starter Kyle Lobstein, pitched the ninth for the win and Shawn Kelley(2-5) took the loss for New York. The Tigers now travel to the Windy City for a weekend series with the White Sox. The series starts Friday night with Justin Verlander (11-11) pitching for Detroit and Scott Carroll (5-8) throwing for Chicago. Pregame coverage begins at 7:45pm on Lansing's Big Talker 1240 WJIM.
