UPDATE: Notre Dame has dismissed Redfield and suspended Butler indefinitely.

Six members of Notre Dame's football team were arrested over the weekend, one of them charged with serious felony crimes.

Irish senior corner Devin Butler faces felony counts of battery to law enforcement and resisting law enforcement during his arrest early Saturday morning. South Bend police say they witnessed Butler shove a woman outside of the popular Linebacker Lounge, a bar not far from Notre Dame's campus.

When officers approached him, things turned violent, according to police. More from an ESPN.com story:

Butler was agitated, according to the report, and when officers told him to back away he allegedly pushed the officers and punched one of them.

"He shouted profanities at the officers and started swinging his fist," South Bend police spokesman Lt. Joe Galea said.

The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment for minor injuries, including a sore wrist, Galea said.

On Friday night, five other Notre Dame football players were arrested about 50 miles south of South Bend when police pulled them over for speeding and allegedly found a handgun and marijuana in their vehicle. More from another ESPN.com story:

An Indiana State Police trooper stopped the five players in Fulton County for driving 73 mph in a 60 mph zone, according to an ISP news release. The officer reported smelling marijuana coming from the car, and a police dog indicated that there were drugs in the vehicle. Officers found a handgun and marijuana after searching the car, according to the report.

Those five players are:

  • Sophomore linebacker Te’von Coney
  • Senior safety Max Redfield
  • Freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson
  • Freshman corner Ashton White
  • Sophomore running back Dexter Williams

Redfield and Williams are the most notable among the group. Redfield has started in the defensive backfield the past two seasons for the Irish, leading the team in tackles last season. Williams was expected to be a regular contributor this upcoming season.

Notre Dame Vice President Paul Browne said in a statement that the school will determine whether additional sanctions are necessary, adding: "Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university."
