5 Things you Need to Know for Thursday, January 30th
1. Last night featured one of the most hyped-up regular season NBA games in recent memory. Unfortunately, the game didn't really live up to the billing as the Thunder dismantled the Heat 112-95. Kevin Durant scored 33 points, his 12th straight game in which he scored at least 30 points. LeBron James, the other best player in the NBA, had 34 points of his own.
This game was hyped up as a "LeBron vs. Durant" matchup, and understandably so as they are the two best players in the league (and also happen to guard each other). But the Thunder won this game because of their depth as Serge Ibaka, Jeremy Lamb, and even Derek Fisher (yes, Derek Fisher is still around) scored 15 or more points a piece.
The Thunder are scheduled to get Russell Westbrook back soon, and they will be very scary when that happens.
2. The Michgan State women's basketball team (13-7, 5-2) hosts Wisconsin (9-10, 2-5) tonight. After losing two straight, MSU rebounded with a 82-68 road win over Ohio State on Sunday.
3. There were two major upsets in men's Big 10 hoops last night. Penn State (11-11, 2-6) went into Value City Arena and got an overtime win over Ohio State (16-5, 3-5). DJ Newbill scored 25 points and made a number of huge plays. He hit a shot with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Newbill hit the go-ahead basket with two seconds left to go in OT, then blocked Aaron Craft on the other end to seal the game. OSU has now lost 5 of their last 6 games.
Chris Collins grabbed his most impressive win as Northwestern's coach as the Wildcats (11-11, 4-5) grabbed a road win at #14 Wisconsin (17-4, 4-4). Drew Crawford scored 30 for the Cats, who held the Badgers to just 26.3% shooting.
4. There were a handful of high school basketball games in the area last night. East Lansing got a nice win over St. Johns. DeWitt continues to play well as they beat Okemos. Waverly rebounded from a loss to top Charlotte.
